Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington on Wednesday evening for a three-day state visit running through September 25, accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan, Communist Party General Office director Cai Qi, and foreign policy chief Wang Yi.
President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump personally greeted the Chinese delegation at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. A red carpet was laid out, a battery fired a salute, and the U.S. Air Force Band played both national anthems as two B-1 bombers flew overhead. It was the first time since 1962 that a U.S. president has met a foreign leader at the base.
Thursday's schedule includes a formal arrival ceremony on the White House South Lawn with nearly 500 service members, a military flyover featuring a B-2 stealth bomber escorted by four F-22 fighters, and a state dinner in the East Room attended by leading American technology and industry executives. The leaders' spouses are to tour the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art.
On the agenda are extending the U.S.-China trade truce, reciprocal tariff reductions on non-sensitive goods, AI safety cooperation, and regional security. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said the two sides reached a deal to extend the truce, and officials say a proposed Board of Trade remains under discussion.
